American University of Iraq Sulaimani: An Introduction
American University of Iraq Sulaimani (AUIS) is an educational institution that encourages critical thinking and independent learning. Located in Sulaimani, Iraq, this university offers an American-style education that is difficult to come by throughout the Middle East. As such, it has garnered a great deal of positive attention from students and teachers in the area, as it brings a fresh perspective to the region.
American University of Iraq Sulaimani: A Brief History of Educational Innovation
In 2006, members of the current board of trustees of the American University of Iraq Sulaimani set out to create a new educational endeavor. They hoped to build an educational institution in which students could benefit from an American-style approach to learning. As such, they ventured to create a merit-based admission system and an academic environment that fosters problem solving, critical thinking, and the ability to learn independently.
A year after their efforts began, American University of Iraq Sulaimani was opened. The first class, which matriculated in 2007, comprised 45 students. Since then, the university has grown to include over 550 students and continues to look forward to opening its doors to an increasing number of individuals.
While an increase in students is one way to measure the success of a college, so too is the legacy that it leaves behind. To create this legacy, the students and teachers at the school have created several research centers. These include the Center for Peace and Security Studies, the Center for the Study of Ancient Mesopotamia, and the Center for Regional Studies. Additionally, the departments have expanded to offer exciting new undergraduate and graduate programs.
Building a new university is not an easy task. The board of trustees that has led AUIS thus far has done a tremendous job in creating an effective learning environment. By maintaining a strong focus on the goals of the educational organization, they have created a strong and inspiring educational atmosphere that pushes students toward success.
Undergraduate Programs: Fields of Study Available to Students
Earning a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science is a four-year endeavor. Students who graduate from one of the undergraduate programs at AUIS have dedicated all four years to learning, exploring, and growing. As such, they often appreciate the new perspective that they have built during their educational experiences.
When studying as an undergraduate at AUIS, students can earn one of the following:
- Bachelor of science in mechanical engineering
- Bachelor of science in general engineering
- Bachelor of arts in English journalism
- Bachelor of science in business administration
- Bachelor of arts in international studies
- Bachelor of science in information technology
Each of these programs, although they are focused on different academic subject areas, encourages students to engage in critical thinking and cross-discipline problem solving. Students are expected to learn how to act in an ethical manner, clearly convey their ideas in written and spoken language, and look at the world on a global level. The dedicated faculty members who lead students in learning these skills are happy to assist them in building the capabilities that will help them achieve success in their future endeavors.
Like universities in the United States, AUIS requires students to also complete a list of core classes. These classes cover several subject areas, including math, science, and literature. As such, they encourage students to create a well-rounded education that will enable them to contribute to society in a positive way.
In addition to choosing a major course of study, students are able to pick a minor. This is a subject area that they study to a lesser degree than their major, but that still allows them to focus on another field. The minors from which students at AUIS can choose include:
- Environmental science
- International studies
- Political science
- Business administration
- Information technology
By including a minor in their studies, students at AUIS are able to further develop their cross-discipline capabilities. They are able to see how each subject area can impact the other, and why it is important to build a well-rounded education that will allow them to thrive in the modern world.
American University of Iraq Sulaimani: Graduate and English Language Courses
The executive MBA program at AUIS is possible because of a partnership that the school has established with Steinbeis Hochschule Berlin. These two educational centers have combined their resources to create a dual master’s degree in international business administration and leadership. The program is open to students who have a bachelor’s degree and have participated in the professional world for at least two years. The goal of the program is to assist students in developing many useful skills, including leadership, strategy development, critical thinking, and negotiation.
The Professional Development Institute, or PDI, AUIS helps students to build their potential in the professional world through English language classes. These classes assist students in learning English, as the language is spoken in many business, science, entertainment, and Internet circles. As such, learning this language will assist students in creating the well-rounded educational background that will help them in succeeding in their professional endeavors. This program offers many benefits, including:
- Preparation for Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
- Improvement of English language skills
- Ability to work or study in an English-speaking country
- Heightened odds of gaining acceptance to international universities for graduate studies
- Instruction provided by native English speakers who have acquired at least three years of experience teaching this language and hold either bachelor’s or master’s degrees
- Education provided in small classroom settings of 15 students or less per class
Students are required to take a placement examination before beginning their English language studies to ensure that they start at the level that best suits their educational needs. In this way, they can enter the PDI program at the correct level and maximize the benefits of their educational efforts.
American University of Iraq Sulaimani is a highly regarded educational facility that offers a wide range of programs for students interested in learning in an American-style school. One of the only universities of its kind in the region, AUIS is a very important part of the educational landscape in the Middle East. Through its efforts, American University of Iraq Sulaimani is helping students to improve their critical thinking and other skills that will ultimately assist them in building a bright future.
